Summary of Lifeways Prevention/Addiction Counselor
Provide evidence-based prevention education for middle and/or high school aged youth in a primarily school-based setting. Administer brief screenings and facilitate/support delivery of indicated prevention program. May assist in addiction counseling services such as individual counseling, assessment and outpatient treatment. Work 1560 hours per year, with one week during the summer months and follow a school calendar.
1. Demonstrate knowledge of substance misuse and substance use disorder. 2. Implements evidence-based practice and programs, following principles of effectiveness, and assures completion of evaluation material for outcome measurement. 3. Screen, assess, recommend youth to appropriate level of care: early intervention, outpatient treatment and/or individual counseling. 4. Conducts counseling sessions with individuals, groups and families, creates recommendations and plans, maintains and monitors case files and participates in staffing to screen or review clients, or follow-up with clients and referrals to other agencies. 5. Participates in staff meetings to continue professional development, identify appropriate level of care for students, learn and express understanding of client progress reports and discharge criteria. 6. Effectively use motivational interviewing with clients to deal with and understand their strengths, goals, needs, and how substance use impacts their lives. 8. Support and always encourage families during all interactions and when appropriate make professional referrals to Lifeways programs and/or an outside agency. 9. Represents Lifeways in a professional manner, as client liaison (following confidentiality laws) and agency representative in the schools, with the court, community agencies, social services, substance use disorder treatment agencies and other youth organizations.
Knowledge of prevention programming and evidence-based practices. · Knowledge of social, behavior, psychological and physical effects of substance misuse and substance use disorder, and individual, group and family therapy techniques related to SUD. · Ability to develop understanding and identify symptoms of substance use disorder to gather interpret, report, and use information concerning clients; and to establish and maintain effective interpersonal relationships with clients. · Language skills with ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional periodicals, journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations. · Ability to write reports, correspondence, and procedure manuals/protocols. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from schools, state, city, community members, clients (students), and parents. · Reasoning ability to solve practical problems, and deal with variety of situations ranging from basic implementation of plans to crisis management plans.
Education: Minimum of Bachelor's Degree - preferably in Human Services or Behavioral Health, but other fields may be acceptable
Credentials: Certified or Licensed Addiction Counselor OR ability to meet state requirements for Addiction Counselor Trainee.
Experience preferred, but not required: History of working in human service or behavioral health setting such as substance use disorder treatment; working with youth; teaching.
Must have a valid Driver's License and consent to a formal background check
